Threesome Fever!

I thought 3 was a crowd?
Then why do so many Young Adult books these days contain a love triangle?  I understand that fiction is about, well, fiction but then why do so many books these days in that genre have two boys and one girl, all competing for each other's affection?

The Twilight Saga definitely didn't start the trend but it feels like every YA book I read these days has 3 lead characters: Hunger Games, The Selection, Maria V. Snyder's Glass trilogy, Erica O'Rourke recent trilogy, and the list goes on.

Don't think this is a rant because I really enjoyed all of the above books and will read them again.  It just puzzled me.  As a teenager, I guess I fantasised about the cute, popular boy choosing me (who didn't!?!) but I can't recall wanting two hotties to adore me.  Especially at the same time.

For me, it makes it a little harder to put myself into the heroine's shoes.  Seriously, two incredibly hot guys loving me and worshiping the ground I walk on and throwing themselves in front of vampires/werewolves/magicians/games masters/etc to save me... give me a real problem, sweetheart!

Your thoughts?

Interesting observation. I don't read YA so can't comment on any of the books you mentioned by the cynical writer in me asks if it isn't a way to introduce and sustain emotional conflict.
